Federal judge appointed by Obama says he will probably overturn Mississippi’s abortion ban

A federal activist judge appointed by President Barack Obama almost certainly will overturn a new Mississippi law that protects unborn babies from abortion after their heartbeat is detectable.

U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves slammed the pro-life law Tuesday during a hearing challenging its constitutionality, CNN reports.

Reeves criticized the state for passing the heartbeat law after he struck down a less restrictive 15-week abortion ban in 2018.

“You said, ‘We can’t do 15 weeks so by God we will do six weeks,’” Reeves said, saying the new law “smacks of defiance.”

The heartbeat law, which Gov. Phil Bryant signed in March, would ban almost all abortions in the state. An unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable at about six weeks of pregnancy, though research suggests a baby’s heartbeat may begin as early as 18 days after conception. Abortionists who violate the legislation could face criminal charges. The law allows exceptions for medical emergencies.

The Center for Reproductive Rights quickly filed a lawsuit challenging the law on behalf of the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the only abortion facility in the state.

The legal fight begins.
“Allowing the law to take effect would force the clinic to stop providing most abortion care,” US District Judge Carlton Reeves wrote in the temporary injunction he issued Friday afternoon. “By banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, the law prevents a woman’s free choice, which is central to personal dignity and autonomy.”

‘Unplanned’ film banned in Canada for its life-affirming content

OTTAWA, May 20, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — Distribution companies are effectively banning the film Unplanned from screening in Canadian cinemas, according to the producers of the pro-life biopic.

Speaking at an Ottawa news conference on May 8, producer Lisa Wheeler said, “We have been effectively blocked from distributing the film in Canada.”

Chuck Konzelman, the film’s writer, director, and producer, told LifeSiteNews via email that at least one of the two largest Canadian film distributors said “content” rather than a lack of consumer demand is the reason for banning the film.

According to Konzelman, Canadian law requires that films have distributors so that they can be shown theatrically. In addition, no rating from one of the provincial film boards can be granted, because the producers must list a distributor on the application forms to the film boards.

Regarding the ban on the film, Johnson told a news conference earlier this month, “I would like to say I’m surprised, but I’m not.” Speaking on the day before Canada’s March for Life, Johnson told the media, “I have to wonder what they’re afraid of.”

Barbara Beavers is hosting a bible study at her home this summer for those who have been through an abortion personally. "We defeat the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimonies (Revelation 12:11),” she stated. "Many of those wounded by a past abortion decision suffer in silence, forsaking the mercy available through the shed blood of our Risen Christ. We fear disclosure of our secrets and never experience the security and joy of being more fully known in the family of God."
