Over 450 people filled the banquet hall at Jackson First Baptist Church on Thursday evening, April 6th to hear Governor Phil Bryant pledge his whole-hearted support for the work of the pro-life community in Mississippi. The audience roundly applauded his earnest hope that our state might be the first in America to be abortion-free.
The event began with a silent auction. Under the able direction of Master of Ceremonies Brad McMullen, the evening unfolded, beginning with an invocation and blessing of the banquet meal by First Baptist senior pastor Dr. Matt Brooks. Outgoing PLM president Judy Batson conducted a brief annual meeting, reporting on the educational achievements of the past year and announcing significant upcoming events. She also introduced the new officers for 2017-2018: president Dana Chisholm, vice-president Dr. Beverly McMillan, treasurer Ron Nederhoed, and secretary Ester Mann.
Highlights of the evening included the presentation of the Pro-Lifer of the Year award to Harold and Pamela Miller, and recognizing board member and side-walk counselor Ester Mann for over 30 years of faithful advocacy for life. After announcing the winners of the door prizes and silent auction items, award-winning meteorologist for WLBT Heather Sophia shared her touching testimony of being conceived by an unmarried high school teen-ager.
Master of Ceremonies Brad McMullan then asked everyone to take out their cell phones and text "Life73" to 95577 to sign up for text alerts on upcoming pro-life events. This is a texting service his company, BFAC, has donated to Pro-Life Mississippi
The banquet concluded with a closing prayer led by Sister Dorothea Sondgeroth, Associate Executive Director of St. Dominic Health Services Foundation.
