THIS IS MY TESTIMONY OF SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF GOD'S FAITHFULNESS TO HONOR HIS WORD AND THAT HE ALLOWED ME TO PERSONALLY EXPERIENCE WHILE HE WAS CLOSING DOWN TWO OF MISSISSIPPI'S ABORTION CLINICS.
There is nothing special about me or my prayers. There is however, everything special about THE LORD I PRAY TO WHO IS WATCHING OVER HIS WORD TO PERFORM IT. HIS EYES ARE LOOKING TO FIND SOMEONE WHO IS AVAILABLE FOR HIM TO SHOW HIMSELF MIGHTY IN. I BELIEVE HE DELIGHTS IN SHOWING HIS FAITHFULNESS TO HIS BELOVED CHILDREN.
In 1987 I was looking for a ministry to reach lost hurting people. I had in mind something like a "Billy Graham" ministry where I would speak to people. They would get saved by the hundreds and I would be able to go home and not have much involvement with the converts. God, however, had other plans. If I'd had any idea what He was up to, I probably would never have participated willingly.
In the same way, He came to get His hands dirty and bloody to reach us, He expects us to be willing to get our hands dirty-perhaps even bloody-to reach the lost with His gospel.
God called me to the abortion clinic in January of 1988. In April, 1988, I was arrested twice in one week for reading the Bible at the abortion clinic even though I had a permit to use amplification. I guess the Word of God does "disturb your peace" if you don't want to live by it. God's faithfulness to His Word in this is another entire story which I won't go into now. My husband and I sued the City for violation of my civil rights in order to protect other sidewalk counselors who wanted to go where the babies were dying and mothers were suffering. As an indirect result of this lawsuit, we lost several million dollars in City contracts. That was a very small price to pay for the privilege of our being used by God to help these dear peaceful sidewalk counselors.
In obedience to this call of God, I went to the Terry Road abortion clinic owned and operated by the infamous abortionist, Thomas Tucker, approximately 3 days a week for several years without much result that I could see. I felt like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke trying to hold back the flood of "dead babies." I began to wonder if I was doing any good or if I had even heard from God at all. One Sunday at Cornerstone Church, Pastor Dan Hall preached a message about the children of Israel failing to claim the ground they had trod upon that God had promised to them. He talked about Joshua and the walls of Jericho (an obstacle in their way). My husband and I went to the Terry RD mill that night and did a "Jericho March" around it. We spoke the Word of God in Matthew 21:21 which says that "...if you have faith and do not doubt...you can say to this mountain 'Go, throw yourself into the sea', and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatsoever you ask for in prayer." We further spoke that the ground there would never be used for anything but God's glory. We opened our eyes and were surprised when the building was still there. We expected it to be in the sea somewhere. God did not move it immediately nor like I wanted Him to but Praise God, in His time and His way, He closed that mill. Businesses have attempted to open there but because God is faithful, I believe, the Terry Rd abortion mill will never be successful as anything but a Church or ministry of some kind.
I had originally started sidewalk counseling because I felt like God wanted me to read His Word in that ungodly place but over the years I got caught up in the urgency of the impending death of the babies and the ultimate suffering of the mothers. I began to read the Word less and plead with the mothers more. In 1994, God convicted me that I had neglected His Word. He didn't want me to stop pleading for the babies but He DID want me to speak His Word in that evil place. I enlisted the aid of my best friend Mary Evelyn and for about a year, at least once a week, she or I spoke the Scriptures God had given me to read there in 1988. The Scriptures were all about innocent blood, the fatherless, judgment, murder, blood guiltiness, salvation, etc.
There was one Scripture that didn't seem to fit. It was Psalms 37:21 which says "The wicked borrows and does not repay but the righteous lend freely." Every time I would read that verse I felt like the cartoon character with an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other, saying "You really missed God on that one. It doesn't have anything to do with abortion. Just don't read that one." By God's grace, I was able to persevere. God ultimately DID close the Terry Rd mill.
Shortly thereafter, my husband wanted me to go to the Briarwood mill and read those Scriptures God had given me and let the demons know that the Word and I were coming. I must confess that I wasn't too excited about alerting any demons to my presence but being the obedient wife that I am (HA! I wish!) , I obeyed and went to the Briarwood mill. As I was reading the Scriptures (from 1988), it suddenly hit me what God had done NOT BECAUSE OF ME BUT IN SPITE OF ME!!
Abortionist Tucker also owned another abortion mill in Southaven, MS, near Memphis, and would perform abortions there on Fridays before losing money at the casino in Tunica County on Friday nights. He then would come down to Jackson Saturday and do abortions here often hearing those Scriptures upon his arrival at Terry Rd. I don't know if he ever heard Ps. 37:21 or not. Tucker had killed 2 women in Ala but the only thing we prolifers had on him in MS was that he had strangled a baby born alive while the umbilical cord was still attached. Unfortunately, at the time, it was not illegal to kill a viable child still attached to its mother. By God's grace, it is illegal to do that now in MS. Although MS had reciprocity with AL, we really needed something illegal that had actually happened in MS to get Tucker's medical license revoked. Tucker had a Nurse who worked for him in Southaven and kept his drug logs. She was the only one who knew about Tucker's drug dispensing violations in MS. This nurse was pro-abortion and believed that Tucker should still be allowed to do abortions even at the time his license was taken. She had been asking Tucker to let her buy an interest in his abortion mill in Southaven but he kept refusing. One day the "enforcers" from the casino came into the Southaven mill to get their money out of Tucker. In his desperation, Tucker told this nurse that if she would loan him $10,000 he would give her an interest in the clinic. Tucker never gave her any clinic interest and never paid the nurse back. This made her so angry, she testified about Tucker's drug violations and this coupled with the AL deaths, caused the MS Medical Licensure Board to take Tucker's license. THE WICKED BORROWS AND DOES NOT REPAY11 GOD WAS WATCHING OVER HIS WORD TO PERFORM IT AND I HAD NOT EVEN REALIZED IT !!
Praise God that he uses WILLING VESSELS no matter how imperfect or clueless they may be!
Sometime after these events and after I had been sidewalk counseling some at the Briarwood abortion mill, Cornerstone Church participated in a service with New Covenant Church in Ridgeland. Bro. Norman Robertson, who had been a part of a great revival in New Zealand I believe,, was speaking. He told the congregation about an incident that occurred during this great move of God when a gloriously converted former lesbian had desired to have the "gay" bar in her neighborhood closed down. He spoke about the Scripture in Acts 19:11 that reads "God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him, were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them." This precious former lesbian lady was meditating on and believed Acts 19:11. So she had a table cloth prayed over and anointed by the elders participating in the revival. She then cut it up and went and stuffed pieces of the tablecloth in every "nook and cranny" of the "gay bar" Within ONE YEAR, the "gay bar" closed down.
Bro. Robertson said that if anyone needed a miracle from God, that after a short break, if we would bring "cloths", we would have an "ACTS 19:11 service. Well, all we had was an old tube sock of my son's that was in my car, but we figured that it wasn't the cloth quality but the quality of the God who did miracles that mattered. We had it prayed for and anointed at that service. We waited to see what God would say to do next. The next week God gave me a word about "desolate gates" and Scripture from Ezekiel 2 about the people who go in and out of the gates who would know that a prophet had been among them. Well, I didn't feel much like a "prophet", but I felt that those anointed pastors who had laid hands on the sock were. I also felt that God wanted me to take the anointed sock and bury it near the gates at the fence at the Briarwood abortion mill. At that time, Federal Marshals were guarding the abortionist Joseph Booker and the Briarwood mill and it seemed somewhat daunting as to just how I could accomplish this with several Federal Marshals in the Briarwood parking lot. But by this time, I had become convinced that GOD knew what He was doing even if I didn't. I went to Briarwood armed only with the sock and the Word not having the faintest idea what to do. Harriet Ashley at the Right to Life office (located next door to the Briarwood mill) loaned me the knife she used to make peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and I went next door to the Briarwood mill and fell on my knees at the fence near the gate and buried the anointed sock. I was really praying hard, "Lord, please don't let these Federal Marshals think I'm burying something deadly here. I don't want to go to jail again-especially not on Federal charges. But not my will but Yours be done." Fortunately, it wasn't in His plan for me to go to jail that day. The Federal Marshals were all around but God must have blinded their eyes because I was not stopped. To this day, even though the fence is gone, I can still see where God helped me bury that sock because it is the greenest clump of grass in that part of the yard. GOD HONORED HIS WORD AND PERFORMED ACTS 19:11,
HE IS AN AWESOME, POWERFUL AND FAITHFUL GOD!! I don't know why He chooses to use us to accomplish His purposes but am so glad He does.
I believe He has a Word for us about how He plans to close THE LAST ABORTION CLINIC IN MISSISSIPPI. Anyone who wants to see Him do this should seriously consider joining us for prayer on the sidewalk outside the last abortion mill in Jackson located on the corner of Fondren and North State Street.
See you there!! Stand still and see His salvation!!------ ESTER MANN
